In 1989 Brian Tyler, an electronics engineer, is among a small group of people puzzled by the strange attraction of a large magnetically radiating rock in a small rural Australian church-yard.  He starts investigating.  Even though the rock – and the effect it generates – is destroyed, a means of artificially recreating the phenomenon is found, and electronic devices to enable this small group to harness the outpouring energy generated by the magnetic field of the planet, are developed.  These allow Magnetically Sensitive people to employ their one real talent – that of performing matter transfers for very limited sizes using a time/space warp – to slowly develop a small world-wide community of sensitives performing actions which seem very suspicious, almost magical, to non-sensitives.

Tyler, as a businessman, is determined to profit from his magnetic energy discoveries, but soon realizes that maintaining a peaceful relationship with the non-sensitive majority is a big challenge, and that keeping his exact abilities secret is the easiest way to achieve this.  He carefully searches for a way to advance the use of magnetic sensitives’ abilities without alarming the commercial or political world, and certainly avoiding the attention of the military.  Over years he builds a commercial operation that works quietly in the background, building magnetic field effects into common electronics components, making the benefits available to all manufacturers.  This minimizes the social impact of the sometimes-startling abilities of magnetic sensitives.

Because they are careful to avoid conflicts with the larger community, and are little understood, sensitive groups in many countries slowly grow, navigating their way around any major reactive social repercussions.  Their whole aim is to allow magnetic sensitives to develop their unusual abilities, forming a new sub-class of people – commonly assumed to be ‘Homo Magnetica’ – able to contribute unique talents to society...  but they don’t realize what the long-term implications might be.  Their vision is too short-term and restricted, because they don’t know what to expect with every new discovery.
